Participant Story: Chloe Barrett-Lennard
I was inspired to compete in the SunSmart Every Woman triathlon in 2023 because I wanted to reach my goal of completing a triathlon post my cancer diagnosis.
I’m a Nurse, a wife and mother of Two children 9 and 6 years old.
In 2021 at 33 years old I was diagnosed with stage 3 aggressive Breast cancer, I underwent a mastectomy, 6 month’s Chemotherapy, Radiation therapy and hormone blocking medication. Through genetic testing I found out I had the BRCA2 gene mutation. The mutation gives me a high chance of developing breast, ovarian and many other cancers in my life time so I needed a full hysterectomy and another mastectomy and had a double breast reconstruction.
I have always been fit and healthy, loved playing sport and prior to my diagnosis I had completed a few small triathlons in the past and my goal was to complete one post diagnosis to give me something to focus on and work towards.
I believe strongly in keeping active, I was lucky enough yo be able yo ride the exercise bike during my chemotherapy infusions which helped with side effects.
I am still healing and navigated life post breast cancer and have my amazing family and friends as my biggest cheerleader that I am forever grateful to.
I am most looking forward to the lead up to the event, the training, running, riding and swimming as I find all forms of exercise very beneficial for my physical and mental healing.
I am also looking forward to being challenged, pushing myself in the long course and being proud of myself and my body when I cross the finish line for all it has been through.
It looks like such a fun and friendly event and I can’t wait.
